We've been making a lot of progress on Havencall as we crunch to finish the first world in time for IndieCade's late submission deadline. Erithos, Aura's hometown and the first town in the game, is complete, and Carathos, the second town, is getting close. Additionally, the first puzzle, where Aura learns Space/Time magic, is also complete. However, the closer we get to finishing the first world, the more we realize we still need to do! As is often the case, that last 10% seems to have no end - but as we get closer, Havencall starts to feel like an actual game, and is actually fun!

All of the user interface components, like the dialogue system and inventory, are also finished. Don't be fooled when I say there's an inventory though - there are only two items you can pick up, and neither one is necessary to complete the game!

I've also put together a short teaser video showing the very beginning of the game (minus the opening cutscene, as it is not done yet):

Havencall Teaser - Indie DB

You say you want some more? Well I'm not surprised, but you'll have to wait until we make an actual trailer for the first world!

In other news, we've decided that we do want voice acting in Havencall. The dialogue system already supports voice acting, however we wont have time to record anything until after the IndieCade submission deadline. I also set up everything needed to support multiple languages (both text and voice acting). While we haven't decided yet what languages other than English we'll add to the game, it is now easy to do (translating an xml file for the text, and recording new audio files for voice acting - although languages can be text only). If anyone wants to help out translating the game or suggest what languages they want to see Havencall in, feel free to post a comment here!

Finally, we created a new tool to quickly put together scenes called the Scene Editor! The scene editor was created by hacking VIDE to create a program that could manage multiple VIDE files, motion paths, sound effects and clickable areas to create an entire scene. While the code may have been rushed and ugly, it is functional, and has helped streamline scene creation greatly. The blue oval in the above image is actually the river sound effect in game, and while I usually keep them hidden, they show where the river can be heard. The movement path also allows me to easily set what scale Aura should be (and what layer she should be in), making it a LOT easier to have her shrink into the distance or walk behind a bush.

Anyways, that's all for this update! Wish us luck as we crunch towards the IndieCade deadline, and I've probably already used up too much time writing this news post, so I'm off!

It's high time for an update! The summer/fall has been incredibly busy for us as we balance our "real" freelance work (that pays the bills) with our game projects, and juggle multiple game projects at once (for more about those, check out the Fancy Fish Games page!). However, Havencall development is very much alive and progressing at this point despite several necessary bouts of time off. And we're excited to be sharing lots of new art, updates and news with you today!

Let's start with the most recent. This environment from the thermal world was completed yesterday:

(Full-size version here) What do you think could be in there?

Well, here's one small part of the interior (of 8 different areas total!):

Exactly what's in the rest of these lava tubes will have to remain a mystery. However, we can tell you that presently 7 of the 8 sections are complete, and the last one should be knocked off our todo list very soon as well. We can also tell you that these caves/lava tubes are the location of a newly-redesigned puzzle involving lava, ice, and switches. Suffice to say, these caves are dangerous and not easy to traverse. However there is something very special waiting at the end if you are able to make it through.

Let's move on to a different world, shall we? In the life/death world, there are several forest scenes to explore, which are also a puzzle location. Here's one of those, nicknamed "Hermit Hut":

And here's a snippet from another area of the forest:

Lastly, another snippet from a completely different area of the life/death world; a view of the city from a distance:

Aura will be able to visit this strange city and interact with other characters there. But she may not like what she finds.

And speaking of Aura, here's a short video showing a front-facing run animation that was completed a while back:

Two important things have changed in the last few months. Firstly, we deliberated for a long time recently about whether we should lower the resolution of the backgrounds/environments in the game. In the end, we decided to do it, in the interest of speeding up production as well as speeding up how fast the game runs. And it turns out that even a 50% reduction in scene size does not look too different at all. Here's part of the hermit hut scene at the previous resolution, and the new resolution, for comparison:

Secondly, we realized that between the breaks from Havencall development this summer, and the speed of production so far, we won't be able to make it to a 2013 release if we want to release something really well polished and high quality. So, as you may have already noticed, Havencall's release date has been changed to 1st quarter 2014. Specifically, we are thinking that March will be a realistic goal. That will give us time to finish up all the remaining assets, get some great cutscenes in, and really polish the game to perfection. So, you will have to wait longer to play Havencall, but you will be getting a less rushed and more awesome game in the end!

That's it for now, but we would love to hear your thoughts on the game and what we've shown so far!

Connect with us!
Facebook page
Official Forums
Fancy Fish Games on Twitter

Please ask any questions you might have about Havencall here! We will answer as soon as possible.

You can also check out Havencall's facebook page.

The full length Havencall summary:

Havencall is a story-driven, artistic point-and-click adventure for Mac, PC and Linux and potentially mobile devices. The game is set in a fantasy universe where many worlds are separated from one another by space-time barriers. You play as Aura, a strange girl who has recurring dreams of a world beyond her own and of a glowing figure who beckons her there. On her adventure to find the place in her dreams, Aura travels through three distinct worlds (each a type of “utopia” with a unique social structure and atmosphere). In each world the player must solve several unique puzzles to awaken Aura’s powers and/or unlock new areas in order to continue. Each world has a final “boss,” or active puzzle (which represent the structure of the world), that must be overcome. The game is meant to be a rich, immersive audio-visual experience, with a story that will encourage players think about some complex questions such as what it means to be “human,” the value of life, and the structure of societies.

Aura being beckoned into another world by a strange glowing figure.
