After releasing Deity Quest and getting lots of feedback, one thing became blatantly clear - while the game was fun for a lot of people, a large number of people didn't understand the mechanics (and sometimes did very poorly and quit). Even those who eventually figured out the mechanics did so by trial and error, taking a long time before they could really get in to the game. From a very long list of feedback and requests, I have polished and tweaked Deity Quest to solve these problems, and finally released Deity Quest v1.1.5!

The main goal of this update was to add information where it was needed - things like the follower's current range (without having to look at skills and equipment), notifications explaining why a follower was not attacking, and a battle log that gives way more information than you probably need (but is still cool, and helpful if you are learning the game).

In addition to making the game clearer, I also added some new features that people had been asking for. There's now a mini-map so that you don't get lost (and can find that darn health fountain that you passed just a minute ago). I also added new items so that you don't have to go through 50 apples to heal your followers later in the game. There are now checkpoints that save your progress within a location, so if you lose the game or need to quit, you don't have to start the entire location over. There's also a second hotbar now so that so that you can quickly access more spells and items to support your followers during battle!

Whether you're a new player or not, this update greatly improves the game and answers a lot of questions that players have been having. If you already have the game, simply re-download it from the storefront you bought it from and make sure the game says v1.1.5 on the title page (if not, please send me a message). To transfer your save files over to the new version, simply copy the saves directory into the Deity Quest v1.1.5 folder (or use DQDB/Net to upload and download the saves). Note that areas you've already explored in the save will not change (no added checkpoints, etc).

Finally, I'm afraid to say that my public server went down (and it is unclear when it will be back up). However, you can still host servers and play LAN games by following this tutorial: http://fancyfishgames.com/DeityQuest/server.html (and trading still works too). I also added a crash logger thanks to @larsiusprime's Crash Dumper! If the game crashes, a logs folder will be created in the same directory where you extracted Deity Quest, and sending me those logs will make debugging much easier.

If you haven't picked up Deity Quest yet, you can get it in the Groupees Build a Greenlight Bundle! The bundle only includes the basic edition, but if you want the extended edition, you can get it on our website for $3 (usually $15) using the coupon code GROUPEES!

I hope you enjoy all the new features in this update, and please keep sending me feedback, as it really helps me improve the game!

Bugs & Balance Issues : Would you consider a patch?

Somewhere, I read that the last patch was released back in 2014. I'm confused: Steam says that your game was released in 2015. Steam also says quote, "Last Depots Update: 19 May, 2015", which is about 4 months after it was released on Steam.

Anyway, after many hours of play, I've noticed several instances of game behavior which many would classify as either a game balance issue or a bug.

1) Save Password Fail : On the DQDB/Net screen, the "Save Password" options does not work. Every time I tick this option and it always forgets my password the next time I try to log in.

2) Items Only Stack Up to 255 (or so) and there is no rollover : I say this because I know that I had collected well over 200 Apples. But then, suddenly, I saw that I only had 6 Apples! When it rolls past 255, it must roll over to 0. You should either limit each item stack to 255 or, perhaps, give a few gold in place of any beyond this. (I would have noticed when it stopped at 255 and then sold my excess! If I only knew, I could have sold my Apples for THOUSANDS of gold!) To reset back to 0 is a design oversight - effectively stealing the player's hard-earned stack of items.

3) No Way to Remove a Follower? : No offense, but... that is ridiculous. After a while, one's roster is filled with many followers that one never uses or stopped using. The "Other Followers" box eventually gets crowded. Very often, one converts an enemy only to later find the same enemy at a higher level. Please, give us a method to either remove followers or move them to a seldom-used, separate category.

4) No Way to Sort Followers? : Contributing to the problem above - the mess that becomes the "Other Followers" box - there is no way to SORT our followers. It would be super useful to have a button to sort our followers by level.

5) Hotkey Items Are Stuck? : After dragging items to a hotkey, they seem stuck permanently! There is no way to [Reset] items like there is for spells. Nor can I find a way to individually remove them. This is bad, because later in the game, after we can learn more spells, we have to put them in the second shortcut bar - assuming the second bar isn't filled with items, too...

(Edit: Reading around, I learned that we can drag individual spell icons from our Spells page onto items in our hotkey bar, replacing them. However, this is not at all obvious or user-friendly. A simple [Reset] button for the hotkey bar or items page would do wonders.)

6) Raising From a Low Level is, Apparently, Cheaty : Followers that are raised up from a low level end up being much tougher and more powerful than the same type of follower Converted at a higher level. Why should it be this way? This is non-intuitive as most players would much rather recruit a higher level enemy rather than go through the hassle of raising them from a low level.

Example: I converted a Jellyfish from level 1 and raised it up to level 4. It ended up with 144 HP, 192 SKL, and 80 DEF. In comparison, a level 4 Jellyfish normally has 126 HP, 168 SKL, and 70 DEF. This may not sound like much difference, but the more you level it up, the bigger the difference. (By the time you raise it a few dozen levels, the difference can be STAGGERING!)

7) Party Order is NOT Reset After Shuffle, Lure, or Roar : After a follower uses the Shuffle skill to change position, or after an enemy uses Lure to bring a follower to the front or Roar to scare a follower to the back, the party's new order becomes fixed. Logically, after the battle is over, one would expect the party's order to be reset back to the way it was before Suffle/Lure/Roar messed it up. Sadly, that does not happen. So, players must manually reorder their party after most battles. This makes things needlessly tedious.

8) BUG: Disabling "Strike" on the Yaktaur Bowman Does Not Work Right : When one disables all of the skills of the Yaktaur Bowman, with the exception of Frostbite, one would expect that the only skill they could use would be Frostbite. But, apparently, they occasionally still use Strike. This can be confirmed by attacking an enemy resistant to Normal damage, such as Ghouls, Zombies or other ghosts and undead. Almost half the time the "[Normal] is ineffective against [Ghost/Undead]" will appear. This should never happen if they are limited to Frostbite.

8a) Yaktaur Bowman are PATHETIC : Even if the enemy is not resistant, Frostbite seems downright weak compared with Doubleshot or even Shoot L2. Further, Yaktaur Bowman are extremely sucky even compared with the Centaur archers we can find in the very first area of the Good start. Compare Centaur's base 90 HP, 70 SKL, and 40 DEF with Bowman's base 60 HP, 40 SKL, and 40 DEF. Then consider how a lot of enemies do extra damage against Ice types...

9) It is Impossible to Entirely Explore Many Locations : Those locations with an abundance of impassible tiles like trees, bushes and water are such that the player can only explore part of it. For instance, one can explore only about half of Forest and perhaps 3/4 of Tundra. Due to the fog-of-war, I have to wonder if there are enemies, food, and chests which are sadly inaccessible. Perhaps your maze generation algorithm could be tweaked?

Also, I find it sad that there is no way to pass over those tiles. Even if our party of followers consists entirely of fliers, we can't pass over a single tile of water or bushes.

10) Number of Enemies in a Given Location is Fixed : If a player managed to kill off all the enemies at a location, then that location becomes barren and useless to the player. It's too bad that there isn't some way to "reset" a location, so that some or all enemies return, allowing the location to be replayed...

11) No Reward for Defeating All Enemies in a Location? I was hoping for some type of reward. Even a mediocre reward or some sort of progression system is better than nothing. Perhaps a "mid-boss" on the far right edge, which would drop something nice like a level-appropriate weapon? Or maybe an item for which several parts must be gathered from different locations? At the very least, I expected that defeating all enemies or reaching the far edge of the map would reset the location next time I visited (see #10, above), bringing the enemies back and maybe even randomizing the location layout.
Every battle if I use a spell too much, it turns gray and I can't use it. But... I still have mana required to cast it. Are there any other conditions other than having enough mana to cast spells?
Also i have a problem with healing and revive spells that my followers have. They just simply aren't using them.

So, Deity Quest has been out for almost a month, and we've been getting a lot of great feedback! Using many player suggestions, we have developed Deity Quest v1.1.4 - the first major update since launch! One of the biggest problems players had was figuring out what was going on during battles - with many followers attacking at the same time, the battlefield becomes chaotic. Additionally, type modifiers end up being forgotten, as it's just too hard to see which type is strong against which other types with everything going on at once.

The main improvement to Deity Quest v1.1.4 was to reduce the chaos of battles by displaying no more than one attack at a time. If two attacks happen simultaneously, it will show one attack after the other, allowing you to see exactly who used what skill on who. This mode can be enabled/disabled in the options menu (it is called "Show Every Attack"), and is enabled by default. While this does slow down battles, the battle speed can be adjusted in the options menu, so you can balance between sequential attacks happening quickly, or simultaneous attacks happening slowly, to get a mode that is perfect for you! The following video shows two battles, the first with Show Every Attack enabled, and the second with it disabled:

Show Every Attack Mode - Indie DB

Unfortunately, because of the way multiplayer battles work, this mode will not be available during multiplayer battles. Speaking of multiplayer battles, I have finally set up a public server! There are two - one called "David's Sever v1.1.3" and "David's Server v1.1.4". The servers will only accept clients of the same version, as there have been some balancing changes. However, the v1.1.3 server will remain up indefinitely in case people are still using an old version. Anyone with the extended edition, feel free to log in to the server and fight friends without having to set up your own server or LAN party. I've also put some of my mid-level followers up for trade, including one unique follower (the Demon Princess)! You can view trades by clicking on DQDB/Net in the extended edition and then clicking "View Open Trades."

Why doesn't anyone want my Demon Princess? Isn't she cute?

As for showing type modifiers, when "Show Every Attack" is enabled, a message is displayed whenever an attack is effective or ineffective! Only one of these messages will show at a time, so if your follower uses an area of effect attack or the attack is effective against BOTH enemy types (for 4x damage), it will only show one of the messages. However, this really helps players figure out what is strong against what, and if you notice the enemy getting a lot of "effective" hits, you may want to rearrange your followers!

There have also been some smaller tweaks, improvements and balancing. For example, the Vagrant Shroom and Angel now start with non-mana consuming attacks. While they still get awesome mana-using attacks when they level up, this ensures that your starter follower will always be able to attack even if you run out of mana (which happens quite frequently when you use Divine followers). Additionally, some people were having trouble with the decimal points, so I multiplied all of the stats (except mana) by 10. And lets face it, dealing 25 damage sounds a lot cooler than dealing 2.5 damage anyways!

Vagrant Shroom 2.0 - now with more kick!

If you already bought Deity Quest, I strongly recommend you update to v1.1.4 - don't worry, your save files will still work (just make sure you copy over your saves directory or use the DQDB save upload). To update, simply re-download the game from the site where you purchased it.

If you haven't picked up Deity Quest yet, I strongly recommend you do so now :P! I've just put the game on sale for 50% off for Desura's Cheap End event, which is the best deal yet (with the previous sale being only 20% off). You can buy the game directly from this widget:

I hope you enjoy the update!
It's been a crazy month putting together all the finishing touches as we race towards our release date of May 1st, 2014. The BETA was a huge success - thanks to everyone who gave feedback! There have been a lot of improvements, many bugs were fixed, and I completely re-balanced of all the followers and skills. Some new features were also added to the game - including multiplayer battles! Additionally, we set up an official website for Deity Quest, and made a much improved full trailer including scenes from later parts of the game. Without further ado, here's the new trailer:

Multiplayer battles were one of the high-ranking requests for Deity Quest, and they are finally added! I'm still working on the Lobby and setup to find and challenge other players with similar levels, but the battles themselves are working. In addition to the trading feature I added a while back, there are now several ways to interact with other players in Deity Quest!

There's less than a month remaining before launch - I hope you're all as excited as we are! This is by far our largest complete game, with the average play time from the BETA test being about 16 hours. Look forward to our final updates as we get closer to release!

Also, Deity Quest is now on Steam Greenlight. Please vote YES if you'd like to see Deity Quest on Steam!

The Basics:

So, you're having trouble beating an enemy group? Luckily for you, you can take the strength of that enemy group, and turn it into your own strength by converting enemies! When you use the convert spell on an enemy, a white progress bar will fill below their health, and when it reaches 100%, they will run away from combat. After the battle is over they will appear in your list of followers.

You can then drag them into your active followers list to use them in future battles - just make sure you put them in the right place! All followers have a different range of attacks, and if they are too far away from the front (the top of the active followers list), they will not be able to attack.

You can figure out where to place allies by noticing where enemies are placed - the Jellyfish (while it was an enemy) was in position 2 and effectively poisoning my angel with a range 2 attack called Sting. Placing the Jellyfish in position 2 in my group is smart - then it doesn't take hits from melee attacks, but can still poison enemies from behind. Take that turtle!

An effective party has all followers using skills at the same time. If a follower is doing nothing, then not only is it not helping out, it is also in danger of getting hurt from long range attacks. If a follower cannot attack, you may need to recharge their mana or reposition them so that they are in range. In the above image, both the Angel and Jellyfish are attacking the turtle at the same time, creating an effective team.

When you convert a new follower type or view the follower type from the bestiary, you can see a breakdown of that type's stats and abilities. The stat chart gives a quick overview of all the stats - it shows that the Jellyfish is fairly well rounded.

OFFENSE describes how many offensive type skills it has and how high its SKL stat is.

DEF describes how many defensive type skills it has and how high its DEF and HP stats are.

MAG describes how many mana using skills it has and how high its MP stat is.

SUPPORT describes how many support type skills it has.

RNG describes the range at which it can attack - this may change as it learns new skills, but it gives you an idea of whether the follower should be at the front or back of the list.

SPD describes how fast it attacks (based on the cooldown of the skills it has).

This view also tells me that the Jellyfish has two types - Water and Poison. This means that it has the strengths and weaknesses of both Water and Poison types. Knowing types will help you predict how your followers will fare in battle. For example, Plant-type followers deal 2x damage to Water and Poison types, and so would deal 4x damage to my Jellyfish! You can click either type to view the full type table showing which types are weak/strong against which other types.

If you click "View Learnable Skills," it will show you what skills the Jellyfish will learn, and what levels it will learn them at. My level 3 Jellyfish only knows Sting, so it can only attack from position 2. But, when it reaches level 5, it will learn Water Shot, which has a range of 4 (hence the high RNG stat in the stat chart above). Water Shot may have higher damage and range than Sting, but it costs 1 mp each time it's cast, and it deals water damage instead of poison damage - which could be better or worse depending on the enemy type.

Equipment skills like Strike and Shoot use the melee and ranged weapons equipped to the follower, so their range, speed and damage all depend on the weapon equipped. Sometimes, choosing a weaker weapon to increase the follower's range will help balance your team.

When using skills that cost mana, you need to know what kind of power the follower uses, which is shown in the type info window. For the Jellyfish, the power is Arcane/Neutral. Arcane means that it uses it's own private mana source, and only arcane followers have MP. If an arcane follower runs out of mana, you have to recharge them with an item or spell, or they will no longer be able to cast spells. The power type can also be Martial, which means that the follower can use any skills (even ones that would normally cost mana) for free. Lastly, Divine followers use your (deity) mana pool - specifically, any mana left of the slider (see the battle images). If the mana to the left of the slider runs out like in the second battle image, then Divine followers will not be able to use any skills requiring mana until you recharge your mana or move the slider. While Divine followers are more powerful than others and have access to a larger mana pool, they will use up your precious mana stores, which in extended battles (or locations) can end up being a problem.

The alignment of the follower (Good, Neutral or Evil) is mainly used to determine how difficult the follower is to convert, and it is always easier to convert followers of the same alignment. Once the follower is converted, typically there is no other penalty for using that follower, even if it does not have your alignment. However, if you are a Good deity and the follower is Evil (or vice versa), then the follower will require more experience to level up, and it will also require 1 extra mp every time it tries to draw mana from your mana pool for spells (if it is a Divine follower).

More Advanced Help

While you now hopefully have an effective and powerful group of followers, you may notice that you or your followers quickly run out of mana, and you have to either leave the area or use items to continue. Rationing items can help, but with the right support units, you can have followers recharge each other and keep them self-sufficient longer. The recharge skill costs three mana but charges four mana, so followers that have this skill can even recharge themselves as long as they have over 3 mana!

You can also enable/disable skills by clicking them in the "View Skills" menu, or click and hold the follower to bring up the skill ring, which allows you to select and enable a single skill and disable all others. This allows you to disable mana-costing skills until you need them (for more difficult battles), saving your followers MP. For example, my Jellyfish in the above image reached level 5 and learned Water Shot, but since this battle was easy, I disabled Water Shot to conserve its mana.

You can also speed up or slow down the battles at any time by going to options, and changing the Speed slider towards S (slow) or F (fast). This only affects the battle speed - and allows you to blow through battles quickly, or see every move and have time to react/cast spells.

Another useful feature is the hotbar at the bottom of battles. While you can drag items and spells from the menus to use them, you can also drag them down to the hotbar once, and then use them from the hotbar quickly as many times as you wish.

Having two powerful groups of followers is also very useful (instead of always using and leveling the same group). That allows you to swap out followers when they get low on HP or MP, letting you continue fighting longer and perhaps even find some fountains to heal your followers. You can also keep reserve melee followers in the back of your active party, where they are unlikely to be hurt. While they can't attack, when your tank starts to get low on HP, you can enable the reserve's charge skill (if it has it) or use an “advance” spell to move it to the front.

Figuring out different combinations and uses of skills, and enabling/disabling them to use them at the right time allows you to get a lot more power out of your followers and will allow you to win battles much more effectively than you would have otherwise.

The second half of the game, parts 5-8, have been completed, with new quests, locations, and the conclusion of the story! Who murdered the Overgod of Aberos? Who gets to be the next Overgod? What strange and powerful unique followers are hidden in the game? I don't want to spoil too much, so most of you will have to wait until the full release on May 1st to find out. But, between now and then, I need to do a lot of final tweaks, polishing and debugging, and so I'm looking for some BETA testers to help! If you're interested, just send me a message or reply to this news post! Otherwise, all I'm going to share from the second half of the game are the following images:

Could Nimiah be the murderer? She has a motive, is strong enough, and is an "Evil" deity!

The old "place torches to find your way through a dark cave" quest!

In the Lab, you can create your own custom follower types, choosing their stats, skills and appearance to create your ideal follower!

I'll probably be quiet over the next two months as I finalize the game. But look forward to a new trailer and the release! If you are press and would like an early copy, let me know. I'll also be adding a starter guide to the game to the tutorial section soon!

Happy New Year!

I'm proud to announce that we've reached the half-way milestone for Deity Quest, our goal for the end of the year! That means parts 1-4, along with all content, code, mini-games and quests are complete.

A bunch of minor features were completed also - like the ability to change your gender.

Parts 1 and 2 focus on the core gameplay and letting the player acquire followers and grow in power. Part 3 has the first quests, which are similar to locations except that you can't leave them until complete, requiring you to ration your resources and followers (having a decent active and reserve party for when the active party gets weak is recommended). Quests also have a definitive progression and end (and often puzzles to complete). You'll only be able to complete one of the two quests in part three though (your rival Ryga will beat the other), and that means that there will be one unique follower that you will not be able to convert without trading with other players (there will be other followers you can't get without trading later on as well).

Little fairies need your help... but what possible reward could you get for helping them?

Part 4 has a similar structure to part 2 to allow the player to grow more, but also includes two mini-games with the two deities where you have to prove yourself before they will let you challenge them. There is also a hidden unique follower somewhere in part 4 - I wonder if you'll be able to find him? Part four ends with you being summoned back into the astral plane where you hear some bad news and are tasked to solve a murder mystery! You wont have to be a master detective to solve the case, but this is quite the cliffhanger for the first half of the game.

Better remember your type tables, as this mini-game will test your magic skills!

I don't want to spoil too much about the second half of the game, but the difficulty will be increased with some curveballs thrown into the core gameplay, there's the murder mystery to solve, and there's also a large side-quest that, if completed, will give you access to some pretty awesome unique followers. I've also solidified some of the later quests, some which will allow you to access areas from the earlier locations you were unable to before. This means I'll be going back and hiding additional followers, items and goodies!

And of course, the player is the best suited deity to solve the case.

So, things are moving along on schedule, and I've been getting a lot of positive feedback from testers. In fact, some people think the game is too fun and they have trouble putting it down! As always, feel free to contact me if you want to be a BETA tester, and I'll probably have another big BETA test in March of next year, with a release late March/early April depending on how many changes are needed. I've tentatively set the release date to April 2014, and while it's possible I may have to push the release date forward (perhaps as far as June), you can definitely look forward to a 2014 release!

This will be an exciting year for deity quest, so stay tuned!

Well, it was a lot of work, playtesting and balancing to get to this point, but part one of eight is now stable and has all features/assets! No fancy algorithms to talk about this time, most of the updates were minor improvements, asset integration, improving the UI and fixing balancing issues. However, I did create a trailer video covering part one of eight now that it is complete, and you can watch it below:

In other news, we are submitting part one of Deity Quest to the IGF! Since it is not complete, I'm not sure how well we'll do, but what is complete is very well balanced and feature complete, and the gameplay is already about an hour on average (I've done a 20 minute speed run, but some people took 2 hours or more exploring and gaining powerful followers). Wish us luck!

Finally, while I won't set a hard release date yet, it is likely that the full game + free demo will be released late this year or early next year. I've already started working on part two, and now that most of the common assets are in, we simply need to fill in the part-specific assets, so it wont be long before the full game is out to play! Look forward to future updates!

Introducing Deity Quest

In Deity Quest, you play as a deity who has just graduated after 100 years in the Ethereal Academy. Finally, you are ready to claim dominion over your first planet, convert followers to fight for you, and support them in battle with your divine magic. You have high hopes of one day becoming the Overgod of the universe, and won't let your long-time rival beat you to it! Deity Quest has been in development since June, and was partially inspired by Pokemon-style games, dungeon crawlers, and role-playing games.

The basic idea for Deity Quest came to me when I was trying to fix some fundamental problems with a scrapped game design where you would support an AI controlled main character. The problem with that design was that there just wasn't enough for the player to do - however that's where I borrowed some ideas from Pokemon. The problems were solved by having a team of up to six followers you need to support and position, with the ability to gain new followers by converting enemies. The game is similar to Pokemon in that there's a large number of follower types to find and convert, however, the followers are all completely AI controlled, and your job is to lend your followers support using your deific abilities.

Deity Quest is also inspired by dungeon crawler games - you'll traverse through randomly generated areas and dungeons while managing limited mana and items to get you and your followers to the end. You're only allowed 6 active followers and 6 backup followers per area, and if they all die, you're thrown out of the dungeon. Likewise, running out of mana can be a big problem, as without mana, you cannot support followers or convert new followers, and followers that draw mana from your mana pool will not be able to use skills.

Finally, the story and progression are similar to a role-playing game, where you travel to different areas, follow a linear plotline and level up to gain new spells and abilities. The story is broken up into eight parts that span your adventures on the planet Aberos. Will you be able to become the Overgod?

Deity Quest has certainly turned out to be a bigger project than I originally imagined, but I'm excited to see it happen and it's already well underway! Right now, I have completed the battle system and an outline of the story, locations, dungeons and boss fights. This is the groundwork behind the game, and I've also done preliminary balancing for all spells, skills, equipment and follower types. There's still a lot to do - all the out of battle code and systems, like handling locations, dungeons and dialog. My current progress is still an impressive milestone and that is why I've decided to announce Deity Quest now. You can see some example battles in the following video:

As a god, you will need to choose an alignment that will affect various parts of gameplay as well as where you start and who your starting follower is. The alignments you can choose from are:

Good - Good deities follow the ideology that every follower's life is priceless, and gives all followers a slow regeneration to help keep them alive. While good deities can convert evil followers, they are harder to convert and require a mana conversion cost of 1 mp every time they draw from the divine mana pool.

Neutral - Neutral deities believe in balance, and that both good and evil have their place in the world depending on the situation. While they give no benefits to their followers, they are able to easily convert followers of all types, and can choose to learn both good and evil spells, giving them more flexibility and options.

Evil - Evil deities believe the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, and will not hesitate to slaughter enemies and sacrifice allies to further their cause. Evil deities give all followers an additional 25% damage bonus to help them accomplish what needs to be done. While evil deities can convert good followers, they are harder to convert and require a mana conversion cost of 1 mp every time they draw from the divine mana pool.

So pick your alignment, convert followers to your side, create a balanced team of followers to fight, and support your followers as you head towards becoming the Overgod! I hope you're as excited as I am and you'll follow my development as I work on Deity Quest - stay tuned for more updates!
